Summary

Functions in accordance with established Cape Fear Valley Medical Center LIFELINK Critical Care Transport Service protocols when performing patient care during transit from one medical facility to another. In addition, responds to needs of various hospital units while not performing LifeLINK specific functions/special projects by performing patient care duties within the health system when accompanied by another Critical Care Paramedic/Paramedic or Critical Care Transport Nurse. Patient care duties performed within the health system remain within the clinical scope of practice of the incumbent and are outlined in the LifeLINK Critical Care protocol. Also utilized as a relief driver of the LIFELINK ambulance when needed. Required to obtain and accurately record all available billing information, including signatures and thoroughly and accurately document physical findings and treatment rendered on a patient care record. Workload for the position is considered demanding and service sets specific performance requirements which must be met.

Major Job Functions

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:

  • Provide, in concert with CCEMT-P, quality critical care by assessing and prioritizing needs, interviewing and evaluating the response of the patient and communicating with physicians and other health care professionals during all stages of the transport
  • Maintain and demonstrate thorough ACLS, PALS, NRP, and ITLS knowledge base and competence in performance of procedures (i.e., hemodynamic monitoring, rhythm interpretation) through continued education, critique of care and performance skills evaluations
  • Maintain competence in performance of Advisory Skills through clinical and didactic instruction
  • Document patient transport record in a timely, accurate and concise manner
  • Participates in the PI process by reviewing treatment protocols, patient records, and assists with statistical studies to determine appropriateness of care
  • Make recommendations for improvements, continuing education, and to solve transfer barriers as part of the Emergency Medical Services System PEER Review
  • Function as a facilitator for family members of patients by addressing their physical, psychosocial and administrative needs as they follow their loved ones from one medical facility to another
  • Assist with inspecting, cleaning, inventory, and restocking patient equipment and supplies and reporting any deficiency hazards or repair needs to the LifeLINK Supervisor and/or Director
  • Assist with loading and unloading patient and equipment onto the ambulance
  • Coordinate with the Critical Care Paramedic to ensure all necessary patient information, medical records, radiographs, and transfer authorization accompany the patient to the receiving facility
  • Perform follow-up visits on hospitalized patients to obtain progress reports for transport staff continuing education and to obtain information for follow-up letters to referring physicians and staff
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

Education And Formal Training

  • Associate’s degree in nursing required
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in North Carolina required
  • Current North Carolina EMT certification or obtain within 1 year of hire required
  • Maintain current NCOEMS continuing education requirements consistent with certification level required
  • Current ACLS, PALS, ITLS or Advanced Trauma Certification and NRP required
  • Completion of NIMS 100, 200, 700 required
  • CAMTS recognized nursing specialty certification within 1 year of employment required
  • Obtain Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) within 6 months of employment required

Work Experience

  • 3 years recent and concurrent nursing experience in ED or ICU setting required OR 3 years in Critical Care Paramedic position and an enhanced orientation process may be substituted for ED/ICU experience
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license or equivalent required and maintain acceptable driving record and remain current on driver safety training required

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required

  • Working knowledge of emergency medical procedures, rescue techniques, hazardous materials incidents, equipment and supplies employed in pre-hospital care, and of communications equipment used
  • Ability to work calmly under extremely stressful conditions and follow established rules, procedures, and protocols
  • Ability to deal with patients, their families and others in a courteous, compassionate, professional manner under the most adverse circumstances
  • Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and other emergency and health care personnel
  • Knowledge of the age specific physiological, psychosocial, developmental, and spiritual needs of the patients typically served

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to drive all types of ambulance vehicles and thorough knowledge of safe driving procedures used in the response of emergency vehicles
  • Hearing, speaking and seeing are required for effective supervision
  • Ability to move around numerous physical locations and within confined areas
  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 150 pounds, with assistance and assume awkward positions in emergency situations
  • Position may involve exposure to skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials
  • For staff functioning in a flight role, maximum duty weight is 240 pounds (110kg) in flight uniform
  • Visual acuity must meet or exceed 20/40 vision, corrective lenses are allowed
